Preparatory Materials now available for the Music Theory Upper Division Proficiency Examination on Friday, May 16, 2025
The three (3) components MSU Department of Music’s Upper Division Proficiency Examination in Music Theory will be offered on Friday, May 16, 2025, starting at 9:00 AM.
A degree requirement for MSU music degrees, as well as a prerequisite for the Form and Analysis class (MU 4313), the Music Theory UDPE is equivalent to the final examinations given in Music Theory III and Ear Training III.

All students who intend to take the Musicianship Skills test component of the Music Theory UDPE – including transfer students joining us in the fall – should contact Dr. James Sobaskie at jsobaskie@colled.msstate.eduas soon as possible to request an emailed .pdf of musicianship materials that must be practiced and prepared in advance of that private audition test. (Advance preparation needed for success.)
Students who intend to take the Written Music Theory test component of the Music Theory UDPE should be present in Music Building Room 1140 at 9:00 AM on Friday, May 16, 2025. Bring pencils with erasers.
IMPORTANT: ALL students who intend to take any test components of the Music Theory Upper Division Proficiency Examination should contact Dr. Sobaskie by email at jsobaskie@colled.msstate.edu for more specific information regarding the testing process and preparation for success.
This administration of the Theory UDPE will be open to transfer students who have completed at least three (3) semesters of music theory and ear training courses, plus current MSU music majors who have satisfactorily completed at least three (3) semesters of music theory and ear training courses but have not yet fully satisfied the degree requirement.
